In the wake of attacks and threats against activists and organizations: Joint statement by the civil society organizations in Israel

We as members of civil society express our solidarity with the activists and organizations subjected to threats and acts of violence that are meant to terrify all of us and to silence our voices. We warn that the threat of violence was already used in the past and clearly did not stop at the level of mere slogans. Someone, who uproots trees and burns mosques, is likely not to refrain from inflicting bodily harm and even death on Palestinians and Israelis whose views and actions he/she considers unacceptable. In these days, when remembering a prime minister assassinated for his views, we raise our voices in protest and concern, because the lesson has not been learned and no real attempt is made to bring the perpetrators to justice. It is not a matter of what is downplayed by such expressions as “taking the law in one’s own hands,” or “a price tag.” Rather it is a matter of threats and acts of violence perpetrated by thugs backed by the inaction of the authorities enforcing law and security.

The authorities have to take the threat seriously and to fulfill their duty in protecting activists and Palestinians in the occupied territories and in Israel, in order to ensure that ideological disputes do not end in gun shots.
