Security Council Resolution 402
UN Security Council decision 402 was made in view of the closure which South Africa imposed on the border crossings with Lesotho, after the latter refused to acknowledge the independence of the Transkei Bantustan. The Security Council appealed to South Africa to take all necessary measures in order to immediately open the border crossings between the two countries, as the economy of Lesotho depends on free passage through South Africa, and the civilian population of the country cannot bear a prolonged closure of the border crossings. The Security Council also requested other states to provide Lesotho with any assistance it requires to cope with the economic hardships resulting from the closure imposed by South Africa.
