Human rights organizations in Israel petition HCJ: attacks on medical crews in the Gaza Strip must cease immediately, the crews must be able to evacuate the wounded to hospital

The petition follows repeated attacks by the Israeli military on medical personnel attempting to provide medical aid and transport the injured to hospital. The army also frequently delays evacuation of the wounded to hospital. Israel is violating its obligations under international humanitarian law in its conduct towards both medical crews and the wounded. As the occupying power wielding effective control over the Gaza Strip, Israel is obligated to guarantee the safety of medical crews and of those injured during the fighting. The Court instructed the military to respond to the petition by 8 January 2009.
