Testimony from Gaza: the story of A.N., a Canadian resident of the Gaza Strip, following media reports stating Israel has permitted 400 foreign nationals to exit the Gaza Strip

For many months, A.N., a resident of Canada, has been attempting, with the assistance of HaMoked, to leave the Gaza Strip, but to no avail as Israel has been preventing the exit of foreign nationals from Gaza. On 1 January 2009, following media reports stating that Israel was going to allow foreign nationals to exit, HaMoked notified A.N. of the development, and he immediately contacted the Canadian consulate. A few hours later, consulate staff informed him that he should prepare to leave, as he would be able to exit in 72 hours. His request that the consulate obtain exit permits for his wife and three children was denied, because his family members have no status in Canada. At 1:00 AM, 4 January, consulate staff informed him that he must arrive at the offices of the Red Cross in Gaza by 6 AM, in order to depart from the Gaza Strip. However, A.N. was not even able to leave his house inthe An Nuseirat Refugee Camp, as the whole area was besieged by Israeli military and tanks.
