Re: Geneva Convention: Blasting Homes and Deportation

Legal opinion by Theodor Meron, legal adviser of the Israeli foreign ministry, 1968. The opinion concludes, inter alia, that using Regulation 119 of the Defense (Emergency) Regulations 1945 for the punitive demolition of houses contradicts international law; that the position of the Military Advocate General Corps, whereby "Blasting a home is a punitive measure under the local law […]", conflicts with the Fourth Geneva Convention; and that the illegality of punitive house demolition stems from the prohibition on the destruction of property of protected persons.
