HaMoked and PHR-Israel condemn the intention to expel Palestinian Legislative Council Member Khalida Jarrar from her home in Ramallah to Jericho: the expulsion order contravenes the Geneva Convention and seeks to curb Jarrar's struggle for human rights
HaMoked and PHR-Israel condemn the intention to expel Palestinian Legislative Council Member Khalida Jarrar from her home in Ramallah to Jericho: the expulsion order contravenes the Geneva Convention and seeks to curb Jarrar's struggle for human rights
At 1.30 a.m. on 20 August 2014, armed Israeli soldiers arrived at Jarrar's home to hand her an order expelling her to Jericho for six months; with it was a map delineating the Jericho District boundaries, within which she would have to remain. Jarrar was ordered to leave Ramallah within 24 hours. Jarrar refused to sign the order and said she would not obey it.
Jarrar has been a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) since 2006. She is also the Palestinian representative on the Council of Europe and head of the PLC Prisoners Committee. Jarrar has been a prominent human rights activist for many years; inter alia, she served as the director of Addameer: Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, worked with UNRWA, and has been active working with Palestinian women.
The order not only violates the Geneva Convention, it is also an arbitrary measure taken by Israel's system of occupation in an attempt to silence and suppress one of the clearest and strongest voices in the struggle for freedom and human rights.
