HaMoked in an onbection to punitive house demolition in Qalandiya: Demolition could leave dozens of innocent people homeless

On February 18, 2016, the military issued a demolition order against the family home of the man who perpetrated the January 25, 2016 attack in the settlement of Beit Horon. The apartment slated for demolition, where the young man lived with his parents and siblings is located on the third floor of a four-story building in Qalandiya Refugee Camp. On February 22, 2016, HaMoked filed an objection to the military’s decision to demolish the home on behalf of the family. HaMoked argued the demolition is a patently disproportionate measure which puts the other apartments in the building at risk and may leave many innocent people homeless. HaMoked demanded the army cancel the demolition order, an entirely unacceptable punitive measure, or at least consider scaling it down to sealing the room that was used by the young man, who was unmarried and dependent on his parents.

On February 23, 2016, HaMoked filed another objection on behalf of neighbors living in the same building. HaMoked raised concerns that the demolition of a third-floor apartment could cause extensive damage to other apartments in the building, which are home to 21 people, including children. Moreover, there is another residential building attached to this one, which is home to 16 people, including children. Given these facts, HaMoked demanded to receive detailed information about the method of demolition.
